What a concealed carry class covers

Formats vary by state, but most permit courses combine three things: your state's firearm and use-of-force law, safe handling and storage fundamentals, and a live-fire qualification where you demonstrate basic proficiency on the range. Class length and curriculum are set by state law — which is why prices and hours vary so much between states.

New to shooting? Take an intro lesson first — you'll get far more out of the qualification. Start with our range checklist and etiquette guide, then look for training facilities with beginner programs.

Concealed carry class FAQ

How much does a concealed carry class cost?
Most CCW classes run $50–$200 depending on your state's required hours and whether a live-fire qualification is included. Multi-day or advanced defensive courses cost more.
How long does a CCW class take?
Anywhere from about 4 to 16 hours, set by state law. Many providers run the classroom portion and the shooting qualification in a single day; some states allow part of the classroom time online.
Do I need a permit to carry in a permitless-carry state?
Even in states with permitless ("constitutional") carry, a permit is often still worth holding — for reciprocity when you travel, faster firearm purchases in some states, and the training itself. State laws change; verify current requirements with your state before relying on any summary.
What should I bring to a CCW class?
Typically a reliable handgun, a box or two of ammunition, eye and ear protection, and a valid ID — plus anything your state requires. Our what-to-bring checklist covers the gear; your instructor will send specifics.
How do I pick a good CCW instructor?
Look for current certifications (NRA, USCCA, or state-certified), small class sizes, real live-fire time rather than a bare-minimum qualification, and recent reviews. A range that runs classes on its own facility is usually a good sign.

Carry laws differ by state and change over time. Nothing here is legal advice — confirm current requirements with your state licensing authority or a qualified instructor.
